Moral and religious organizations oppose the Da Vinci Code movie for several reasons. Holy Scripture exhorts Christians to "earnestly contend for the faith" (Jude 3) and to oppose and rebuke those teaching heresies for monetary gain (Titus 1:10-14). Christians are exhorted to "have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them" lest they further enslave other unstable souls (Ephesians 5:11). Followers of Christ are encouraged to hold to the truth without compromise and to speak the truth in love (Proverbs 23:23; Ephesians 4:15). "Unto the pure all things are pure" (Titus 1:15) meaning pure hearted and simple minded people who do not read the Bible will be quick to believe what they see on the big screen as movies and television carry weight in our culture. Bible reading believers will not be swayed by such inaccurate representations of Christ, blatant lies, conspiracy theories, nor erroneous revisions of Church history. The unread masses however can easily be mislead and deceived. It is for them that the moral and religious organizations lift up their voice. That being said "we can do nothing against the truth, but for the truth" (2 Corinthians 13:8). All of the media hype and propaganda only serves to alert the Church to lift up its voice against heresy and inform society of lying vanities. Among the many reasons the novelist Dan Brown and movie producers of the Da Vinci Code are receiving opposition are: 1.The author claims the fictional novel is based on historical fact, which is nothing further from the truth. 2.Brown inaccurately claims the suppressed Gnostic gospels are the earliest written gospels. Not so as the New Testament came long before them. 3.Brown's gospel is very chauvinistic claiming women must become men in order to experience salvation. 4.The Dead Sea Scrolls are inaccurately said to have been discovered in the 1950s, when in actuality they were found in 1947. 5.The Dead Sea Scrolls are not the earliest Christian records. The Scrolls are only Jewish documents. 6.Brown falsely alleges Jesus never asserted His divinity nor was ever worshipped until after the Council of Nicea in 325 AD. This is not the case as Christ Jesus repeatedly affirmed His divinity both in what He said and did while on earth. Jesus often referred to Himself as God, one with the Father in heaven and worthy to be worshipped. The New Testament texts preceded the Council of Nicea. 7.Christianity never borrowed its beliefs from the pagan religion of Mithraism as Brown erroneously states. Christ and Mithras may have had the same birth date but had nothing else in common. 8.Jesus was never married to Mary Magdalene or any other woman for that matter. The Da Vinci Code strives to make a physical connection with Christ and Mary Magdalene which is both untrue and heretical. 9.Jesus never had flesh and blood children, though Christ served as a mediator between God the Father and humanity reconciling the two and bringing many sons and daughters into adoption via the inward dwelling Holy Spirit. The Da Vinci Code pursues a physical connection and overlooks the spiritual significance of Christ's mission and work on the cross. 10.The Da Vinci Code dubs Jesus as the "original feminist" and seemingly encourages sexuality as a means to access the divine. Nothing is further from the truth as Jesus taught His disciples to deny themselves and be living sacrifices. Self indulgence has never been a part of the life nor gospel of Christ. Jesus spoke of a heaven in which there would be no marrying between the sexes but rather an inner spiritual connection. 11.Jesus taught God is a Spirit who interacts with the spirits of men (John 4:24; Romans 8:16). No flesh need be involved. Brown conversely takes the approach that female sexuality is a crucial element to the divine. By no means is temple prostitution a means of accessing the divine. 12.Brown the author of the Da Vinci Code distorts even the sources he himself cites as reliable. 13.The Gnostic gospels which Brown relies upon trust in knowledge rather than Christ for salvation. There can be no salvation without a Savior. Christ is the Savior of the world, not intellectualism. There were two trees in the garden of Eden: the tree of life and the tree of knowledge. Adam and Eve partook of the tree of knowledge and it did not sustain them. Neither can Gnostic revelation that came after the New Testament supersede previous revelation and sustain its followers. On Christ the solid rock we must stand. All other ground is sinking sand. The root of evil is not sin but rather self. Unbridled and without being harnessed self left to run rampant without restraint can be most destructive. Coral Ridge Ministries encourages and grants permission to churches to show The Da Vinci Delusion to their congregations after May 14, 2006 as a means to equip believers to answer Da Vinci Code distortions and lies. Their website is http://www.davincidelusion.tv As Jesus said, "Seek and you shall find" (Matthew 7:7). If people would get as excited about reading their Bibles as they do about seeing fiction depicted on the big screen maybe deep spiritual truths would become more easily understood and real to them. |
