Bush and Blair Under Fire Again

Author: John Onan

Two world leaders who are considered as strong as any allies, George Bush and Tony Blair are watching both of their administrations come under fire due to the company they keep.

Bush's Vice President, Dick Cheney, has got himself involved in a scandal in which a CIA operative was "outed" in what appeared to be an attempt to smear her husband. This has led to an indictment of Cheney's top assistant, Lewis "Scooter" Libby.

On the other side of the Atlantic, Blair has come under excessive heat for backing his own scandal-prone friend, British cabinet minister David Blunkett.

Blunkett was forced to resign (again) for the second time in less than a year. The first was over an affair that was exposed between him and a married American magazine publisher.

Now it appears Blunkett took the lucrative positions hoping to recoup some of the money he had spent on an expensive court battle to establish that he fathered the woman's 2-year old son.

Both leaders have been damaged politically in the past week, but this could just be the beginning. It is being reported that Bush's own top guy Karl Rove barely escaped the indictment gauntlet and may not out of the woods when the next grand jury meets. As long as Rove is still working at the White House, questions won't go away about his involvement in "Wilson-gate."

For Blair, he has declared that he will not fight another election after winning his third term this past May. Pundits consider him virtually powerless now, which is a drastic statement, considering how loved he seemed to be not so long ago.

Opponents of these two gentlemen have harshly criticized their roles in the "war on terrorism", especially in Iraq, when Blair was the only major leader to back the U.S. after the French, German, and Russian governments were opposed to ousting Saddam Hussein.

Now that it's been nearly three years, and no signs of Hussein's WMD's, Bush's and Blair's political enemies and the media (some say there's not much difference between the two) are primed and ready to put these two men out to pasture.
