Author: Ove Marcelind

The bird flu is a very scary and disturbing illness that is becoming worldwide threat. One way to protect us from this horrible disease is to be armed with facts and information that will make us understand it more clearly.

Migrating birds like ducks, geese, and swans can carry and spread the virus to other birds. This can be done across the county borders as well. Some of the migratory birds do not seem to get sick from the bird flu but domestic birds like chickens and turkeys can die from it. A bird can get bird flu from another bird by coming into contact with its infected feces or saliva. Birds can also get sick if they come into contact with dirt or any other infected surfaces. Some experts think that live bird markets and where birds are kept close together are places where the virus has spread quickly.

If a person does become infected with the H5N1 strain of the bird flu, it is not likely that they will spread it to others. All of the human cases have happened because they got it directly form the infected birds. These people live in rural areas and where families keep poultry that they butcher themselves.

It is important to know how to protect yourself from the bird flu. The best way is to do the same things to protect you from any other virus. No matter where you are living and what your health situation is, you should wash your hands often with antibacterial soap. This is especially true after using the bathroom and cooking meals.

Take the proper safety precautions from the bird flu. Never eat undercooked meat especially poultry. Always wash kitchen surfaces when preparing uncooked meat. Always wash your knives, cutting boards and utensils that touch the uncooked meat. Never mix uncooked meat with vegetables and fruits.

If you plan to visit another country that has an outbreak of this bird flu virus, you should see your physician to see what you can do to protect your body from getting this virus. Stay away from chickens, ducks, geese and any other wild birds. Keep your hands clean and carry hand sanitizers to keep your hands clear from any harmful bacteria.

When you are careful and have the right information about the bird flu, you can protect yourself and be safe. Many new factors are being investigated all the time. There are new developments that are happening all the time regarding the bird flu. It is best not to panic and remember that we are safe and one day there will be a cure for this problem as there has been for many epidemics in the past.
