Disgusting Dog Behavior and What You Can Do to Put a Stop to It

Author:

Dogs, Im sure youll agree, can exhibit some fairly bizarre behaviors. A few of them are down right disgusting! Lots of dog owners around the world look at these odd but common dog behaviors and scratching their heads in confusion, asks themselves just why their dog is doing this? The first thing we need to do is to understand the reasons behind these unwanted behaviors in order to be able to successfully put a stop to them.

Lets first look at the age old problem of garbage can raiding. Not only is this dog behavior disgusting it can be quite annoying coming home to a huge mess of eggshells, coffee grinds, food stains and shredded wrappers strewn everywhere that you have to clean up. Why dos your dog do this? One simple answer could be hes hungry. Your dog probably smelled something delicious that you threw out and was bound and determined to get a hold of it.

This problem can usually be stopped by getting rid of strong smelling people food such as table scraps either down the garb rater instead of put in the garbage can or be placed in a separate sealed bag or by putting the garbage can in room that is inaccessible to your dog. If the outdoor trash can is the favorite target, then either install a locking mechanism on the trash can lid or build an enclosure around the can to keep the dog out.

Another dog behavior that people find disgusting is litter box raiding. If you let the dog in a house with a litter box, you can bet your last dollar the dog will find it within no time at all. Poop-eating, or if you want to use the scientific name for this behavior Coprophagy has had experts come up with many theories as to why our dogs do this. Some medical conditions such as pancreatic of intestinal dysfunction, starvation or even severe malnutrition due to advance infections from parasites such as worms can cause this behavior to occur.

Others believe that lack of vitamin B will cause dogs to eat feces. Still others believe mental condition caused by anxiety because the dog owner was too harsh when housebreaking their dog. What ever the reason is, the quickest way to stop this behavior is to keep your dogs yard and walking area free of any type of feces. Also put the cats litter box out of the dogs reach. A visit to your vet would also be a good idea to rule out any medical factors.

The last misunderstood dog behavior although not exactly disgusting but certainly seems odd is grass eating. Dogs are naturally meat eaters and it is hard to understand why Rover would pass up a juicy steak to go chow down on your lawn. The reason might be that your dog has a tummy ache. Dogs surely eat vegetation when they feel poorly related to their digestion system. This is not dangerous to your pup unless the yard has been chemically treated. However, keep a close eye on his eating habits and seek your vets advice if your dog starts to display signs of poor health.

By understanding how your dog thinks and learning the reasons behind the habit, you will find it much easier to prevent or stop altogether those actions that we as dog owners deem as disgusting dog behavior.
